Certicom Announces Agreement with BEA to Provide Extensive Security for BEA WebLogic Enterprise

Leading E-Commerce Transaction Server Now to Include Certicom’s
SSL Plus Security Technology

BEA USER’S CONFERENCE 2000, SAN FRANCISCO, February, 22, 2000 – At the Fifth Annual BEA User’s Conference in San Francisco this week, Certicom, a leading provider of mobile e-business security, announced an agreement with BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), the E-Commerce Transactions Company™ under which BEA will license Certicom’s Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Plus™ 3.0 technology to secure its award-winning BEA WebLogic Enterprise™. The integration of Certicom’s trusted encryption into BEA WebLogic Enterprise, the market’s leading CORBA and EJB application server, will provide BEA customers added assurance that their sensitive, mission-critical e-commerce transactions will be protected.

"In order to choose the best SSL encryption solution for BEA WebLogic Enterprise, BEA performed an extensive evaluation of security providers," said Joe Menard, president of the BEA E-Commerce Server Division. "We chose Certicom because they offer proven encryption technology packaged with a superior level of support that fully addresses the needs of our high-volume application servers."

BEA WebLogic Enterprise delivers an e-commerce transaction platform for Web-based solutions and applications built using the latest distributed object technologies, including Enterprise Java (J2EE) and CORBA. BEA is intended to meet the demands of the e-generation with end-to-end e-commerce transaction solutions that work, without fail, every second – no matter how many thousands of transactions are processed.

"Many of the world’s most successful companies rely on the BEA end-to-end e-commerce transaction software to deliver their e-business solutions," said Rick Dalmazzi, president and CEO of Certicom. "The addition of our trusted SSL Plus encryption provides an added security backbone to BEA WebLogic Enterprise, so BEA customers can be assured that their mission-critical e-commerce information is secure."

Created by Netscape four years ago, SSL has rapidly become the most widely used security protocol in the industry. Certicom’s SSL Plus toolkit is the industry’s most widely deployed commercial SSL product, due largely to its ease of use, rapid development time, and support for RSA, DSA/Diffie-Hellman, and elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) – the only commercial SSL product with that capability.

About SSL Plus
SSL Plus 3.0 has been designed to provide plug-and-play integration for virtually any network application. Designed for developers creating general-purpose desktop-to-server solutions for e-commerce and the enterprise, SSL Plus 3.0 shortens development cycles and reduces product costs while assuring a low maintenance implementation. Its robust architecture and API, as well as industry leading documentation and support enable rapid application development to speed time to market.

A key feature is the callback layer, which provides a critical architectural advantage enabling developers to write specific callbacks for control of platform specifics. As a result, developers have the type of strong control and detailed information about secure transmission sessions needed to add fully secure SSL functionality rapidly and with confidence to client/server applications. SSL Plus 3.0 is also thread-safe to simplify customer design and implementation phases, and it supports blocking and non-blocking I/O to enable both simple and more sophisticated I/O channels.

The SSL Plus toolkit is used by leading companies such as Oracle, Sun Microsystems, Lotus and Intuit to build security into a wide range of applications and products for the Internet, intranets, and corporate networks, from traditional Web browsers and servers to home banking products, handheld devices, and legacy mainframes.
